Significance Of Karthigai Deepam
The Karthigai deepam festival takes place on the full moon day of the Karthigai month, which coincides with the Karthigai star. This is a 10-day festival, and it is also called Tiruvannamalai Deepam. Each day has its own special importance. It is provided as a special celebration at the Arunachaleswarar's temple in the Annamalai hills in Tiruvannamalai. The popular Bharani Deepam is lit in Arunachaleswarar's sannidhi (temple) on the tenth day, early in the morning. On the final day, devotees head to the Annamalai hills to worship the Bharani Deepam.

Cultural Practices and Rituals
In south India most houses are cleaned and decorated with kolams (rangoli/ mugulu) made out of rice flour, lights clay oil lamps or agal vilakku on the night of Karthigai festival. The lamps are decorated in their homes, on doorsteps, windows, balconies, and different locations throughout the house. The light will shine brightly throughout the streets. Lamps are placed everywhere, from fields to cattle sheds, to bring light to all corners. On this day, people also fire various types of fireworks. On Thiru Karthigai, all temples are illuminated, and special prayers are offered.
