What is Vaikunta Ekadasi? What Should We Do On That Day?

Vaikunta Ekadasi is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu, observed on the 11th day of the waxing moon in the month of Margashira (December-January). On this day devotees observe fast, pray to Vishnu, visit temples, and perform spiritual practices to seek his blessings for spiritual liberation.

Visit a temple of Lord Vishnu

Visit a temple of Lord Vishnu and participate in the Vaikunta Ekadasi celebrations. Incase if you are not able to visit temple and if you have deities of Lord Vishnu or any others of his avatars at your home, you can decorate the deities or photo frames and perform a special pooja with your family members.

Keep a fast

On this day, try to observe fast. Fasting is not only beneficial to our body and mind but it also has lots of spiritual benefits. There are different levels of observing a fast  and you may select a level according to your convenience. The fasting include a Nirjala fast (no food or water), a jalahar fast (water only), a Phalahari or Ksheerbhoji fast (fruits, milk, and water), and a Naktabhoji (a single meal of non-grain food).

Chant Krishna mantras

Chant the mantras like "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" or Hare Krishna Maha-mantra on that day. Chanting this mantra purifies our heart, and ultimately helps us attain spiritual perfection.

Read Bhagavad Gita

Bhagavad Gita was directly spoken by Lord Krishna, there in no difference between the Gita and Krishna. Reading the Gita is as good as associating with Lord Krishna. Spend some time in reciting the verses of Gita and understanding their meaning.

Give Charity
