Where Will We Get Shaligrama Stones?

Shaligrama stones (Shaligrams) are found in the bed and banks of the Kali Gandaki River (Gandaki River) in Nepal.

kali Gandaki River, Nepal : This river, a tributary of the Gandaki, is the sole source of authentic Shaligrama stones. The stones are actually fossilized ammonites (dating back millions of year) that have been naturally carved by a type of worm called the "vajrakita".

Pilgrims and locals typically search for the stones in specific areas:

Muktinath Temple, Nepal:

This is a major pilgrimage site (known as Muktikshetra, or "place of salvation) and is close to the source of the river.

Damodar Kunda:

The sacred lake where the stones are believed to originate, located in the upper Himalayan region of Nepal. The stones roll down into the Gandaki River when the ice melts in the summer months.

Jomsom:

These villages in Mustang are common bases for pilgrims to trek to the river and search for shaligrams.

Other ways to obtain Shaligramas

Purchase:

While scriptures state that the stones should not be bought or sold for monetary value, it is possible to purchase them from local dealers and shops in the Mustang region (Jomsom, Kagbeni, Muktinath) or from various religious and spiritual stores in India and online.

Temples:

Some temples, such as the Guru Narasimha temple in Shaligrama, Udupi, and the Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan, have these sacred stones.

Note: Collecting small number of Shaligrams for personal worship from the river is generally considered acceptable, but commercial trade of large quantities is discouraged by some religious traditions.
